Repair or Replace? When It’s Worth Fixing Your Laptop

A broken laptop doesn’t always mean buying a new one. Here’s how to tell when a repair makes sense, when replacing is the better call, and the costs people often forget.

When your laptop breaks, the first question is usually whether it’s worth fixing at all. A new laptop is a big expense, and a repair often costs a fraction of the price, but it isn’t always the right call. Here’s how to decide.

A simple rule of thumb

If the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new laptop, and the laptop still does everything you need, repairing usually makes sense. Age matters too. A laptop that’s less than about five years old, and was decent quality when you bought it, is nearly always worth fixing.

Repairs that are almost always worth it

  • A cracked or faulty screen. Replacing the display panel costs far less than a new laptop, and everything else stays exactly as it was.
  • A worn-out battery. If your laptop only lasts an hour off the charger, a new battery can bring back a full day’s use.
  • A broken charging port. A loose or damaged DC jack is a common fault and a straightforward repair.
  • Keyboard or trackpad problems. Sticky keys and dead trackpads can be replaced without touching your files.
  • Slow performance. Swapping an old hard drive for an SSD and adding memory can make a sluggish laptop feel new again.
  • Software problems. Viruses, Windows errors and blue screens usually need no new parts at all.

Our laptop repair service covers all of these, and most are finished during the same visit. For cracked or dead displays, see our laptop screen replacement page.

When replacing might make more sense

  • The motherboard has failed on an older laptop. The part can cost close to the value of the laptop.
  • Serious liquid damage. When a spill has damaged several components, repair costs can add up quickly.
  • It can’t run Windows 11. Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Home users can still get security updates through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates scheme until October 2027, but after that, laptops that can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 will stop receiving security fixes.
  • Your needs have outgrown it. If you’ve moved on to video editing or modern games, an older machine may never keep up.
  • Several things are failing at once. A worn battery, a failing drive and a broken hinge together can tip the balance.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How old is the laptop, and what did it cost new?
  • Apart from this fault, does it still do what you need?
  • How much time would it take to set up a new laptop with your files, apps and settings?
  • Is anything else showing signs of wear, such as the battery or the hinges?

Getting more years from an older laptop

If you decide to keep your laptop, a little care goes a long way. An SSD upgrade and extra memory deal with most slowdowns, a professional clean stops overheating, and a fresh battery restores a full day away from the charger. Keeping Windows updated and running regular virus scans keeps it quick and safe. Done together, these jobs can add several more years of useful life for much less than the cost of a new machine.

The hidden costs of replacing

The price tag isn’t the only cost of a new laptop. You’ll need to move your files across, reinstall your software, find your licences and get everything set up the way you like it again. Repairing also keeps a working device out of landfill, which is better for the planet.

If you do decide to replace your laptop, don’t just throw the old one away. It still holds your personal data. Our sister company EcoReboot provides secure data destruction and responsible IT recycling, and we can transfer your files to the new machine for you.
